Women of Steel Statue, Sheffield,
created by Martin Jennings

In the heart of Sheffield, stands a statue of two young women, dressed in overalls wearing heavy boots. One wears a hat, with safety goggles on her forehead, the other a scarf tied around her head.

The statue was unveiled in 2016, to commemorate the work carried out in the steel industry by city’s women during the First and Second World Wars. Although it’s taken over 100 years for this recognition to be made.

After the unveiling of the statue, writer and author Michelle Rawlins wanted to find out more about the women of the steelworks, only to discover, as with much of women’s endeavours in the past, there was nothing to be found. With memories of the Second World War fading fast into history, Rawlins set upon a quest to capture the memoirs of those women still alive, before their stories were lost to time.
